Loose skin under the chin, the soft double chin that is skin rather than fat, is a use Ultherapy is FDA-cleared in the US for: to lift lax submental tissue. It was cleared in 2012 on a study in which 51 of 70 patients reached the lift threshold under the chin and on the neck. The clinician runs lines of focused ultrasound under the chin at the depths chosen from the image, kept away from the thyroid, the windpipe and the major vessels and nerves as the label requires. The heat builds new collagen over three to six months so the line from the chin to the neck cleans. One session, with the price in writing at a free consultation at Ultherapy London, 130 Harley Street.
Loose skin, not fat
Ultherapy does not remove fat. A full double chin is fat first and skin second, and needs a different plan before Ultherapy tightens the skin over it; the clinician tests the area at the consultation by lifting it and says which you have. Loss of fat or volume has been reported rarely in the published studies, so the depth is chosen per zone with the image, and the can it go wrong page sets the risks out plainly.
What the study measured
In the study behind the 2012 clearance, 51 of 70 patients reached the lift threshold under the chin and on the neck, and reviewers who did not know which photograph was taken first saw improvement in 84% of those. The neck and jawline page sets it out.
The session and the result
About 30 minutes under the chin, or 60 to 90 with the face and neck, with a comfort plan agreed beforehand; redness for a few hours, swelling for a day or three, tenderness for up to two weeks. The lift builds over three to six months, when we photograph it, and holds for around a year in our experience, with a repeat considered after 12 to 18 months.
